For the Spring/Summer 2011 collection Whyred find inspiration in the things people aspire to, their hope and dreams. The collection is an eclectic mix of garments referencing nature’s embodiment in a person’s longings for extraordinary things such as flying. Birds are a fundamental source of inspiration. The sleek coating of their wings inspired the construction of the fabric which has a shiny protective coating.

A deep ocean, with its intriguing inhabitants and colors tantalizing our fascination with the unknown, was an additional source of inspiration. To contrast the lightness and airiness of birds, the ocean motivated a silhouette which is a balance between volume and constrictiveness. This brought both simplicity and confidence, furthering the collections definitive look. A contrast achieved by a marked waist or by mixing boxy and narrow garments creates this aesthetic.

Key details include: drapes, gunmetal zips and accessories, flowing materials, cascading cuts, and boxy jackets.

MATERIAL

The look and feel of the fabric in the collection is essential to the overall aesthetic. Fabric treatments give a feather-like touch to cotton and the collection is full of flowing fabrics like cupro and silk. Classic fabrics like regular cotton, fine merino, lamb wool, and military wools, are combined with washed leather, double-faced jerseys, and jerseys with varying treatments and washes.

COLOURS AND PRINTS

Inspired by the light inside a tunnel, the colours in the collection go from dark to light like spring turning into summer. Important colors are: black, navy and wine. These colors transform into darker shades, such as: deep forest green, military green and strong green. Accent colors include: warm mustard, cobalt blue, purple, lavender, new blue, light cement and steam. To relate to the vision of going through a tunnel, the Whyred print has taken an architectural approach with a drawing of a never-ending corridor. The pencil drawn mishmash of bird wings becomes an all-over print alluding to the bird theme.

SHOES AND ACCESSORIES

When it comes to shoes and accessories, the preselected materials influenced the designs and the colors. The shoes have wrap seams, molded heels and varied heights. Materials, such as: elastic suede, nubuck, mesh and natural colored leather are seen throughout the collection. The bags are in different shapes and sizes of treated leather, nubuck, suede, and natural colors. Both shoes and bags are categorized into groups such as day, day-to-night and evening. Key colors include: black, cognac brown, mustard, shiny blue and intense blue with gun metal details.
